Popular Voice over IP provider Skype is bringing their free SkypeOut calling promotion to an end, replacing it with a one-time fee for a year of unlimited usage.
Looks like Skype decided that the 7 months of free SkypeOut calling has landed them enough new users that it's time to up the ante a bit - luckily it only costs $14.95 for an entire year of unlimited SkypeOut calling if you purchase the package before February ($29.95 after). That amounts to a meager $1.25/month, which is a damn cheap unlimited outbound calling plan. The unlimited calling plans apply only to calls placed inside the US and Canada to phone numbers in the same (sorry international readers!).
Update: The latest version of Skype, 3.0, is now available as a free download (Windows, Mac, Linux, PocketPC.)
